Dr Messay Muguleta

This Policy Brief examines the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on food security in Ethiopia, with special emphasis on its implications for informal business actors in urban areas as well as smallholder farmers. It starts by providing a socioeconomic profile of Ethiopia, and goes on to provide a global, African and Ethiopian overview of the pandemic; examine the WHO’s strategic response plan for Africa; and analyse the impact of the pandemic on food security in Ethiopia. It recommends that all the safety measures put in place by the WHO Regional Office for Africa should be maintained, except for the complete closure of businesses.
