About the book
This is the first historical biography in English of the Egyptian scholar and diplomat Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the most intellectually accomplished of the nine UN secretaries-general to date.
The first African and the first Arab to occupy this post, Boutros-Ghali did so in the five momentous post-Cold War years (1992-1996), massively expanding UN peace-keeping efforts, and leading intellectual debates on dedelopment, democratisation and human rights. Earlier, as Egypt’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, he was a key architect of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. He was a major figure in Third World diplomacy, and a Professor of International Law and International Relations. This accessible biography situates Boutros-Ghali’s career in its political, social and cultural context.
CHAIR: Prof David Monyae, Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations, and Director of the CACS
MAIN SPEAKER: Prof Adekeye Adebajo, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship (CSD), University of Pretoria
DISCUSSANT: Prof Suzanne Graham, Associate Professor of International Relations in the Department of International Relations, and Vice-Dean: Teaching and Learning, Humanities at UJ.
