UJ Receives valuable Chinese art collection

Through its Centre for Africa-China Studies, UJ has received a comprehensive collection of ancient Chinese paintings from Zhejiang University, valued at 883,000 RMB (approximately R2.2 million).

The collection comprises 232 volumes, each containing more than 12, 000 reproductions of ancient Chinese paintings, sourced from 263 museums and cultural institutions worldwide. It is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive archives of ancient Chinese art ever assembled.

In March, the executive director of the CACS, Prof David Monyae, the UJ vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Innovation, Professor Refilwe Phaswana-Mafuya, travelled to angzhou for the official handover ceremony.

Once fully catalogued, the collection will be housed in the ully catalogued, the volumes will be housed in the APK Library at UJ’s Auckland Park Kingsway Campus,

UJ is the only African university — and one of only four universities worldwide — that has received this prestigious collection. the donation is intended to supporting research, teaching, and interdisciplinary scholarship across the humanities, and strengthen Africa-China cultural ties.
